Imagine braving the coldest outdoor hockey game ever recorded, with temperatures dipping below minus eight degrees Fahrenheit! That's exactly what hockey announcer Aaron Sims did, and he's here to tell his incredible story.
Sims, a veteran broadcaster with over three decades of experience, found himself in the midst of a historic event during the Hockey Day Minnesota celebration. The American Hockey League (AHL), the NHL's primary development league, hosted its first-ever outdoor pro hockey game, and Sims was there to capture every thrilling moment.
But here's where it gets controversial: Sims decided to call the entire game from outside, braving the brutal cold. With an electric parka and hand warmers, he braved the elements, even as the press box was full and the plastic tent set up for him was less than ideal. Sims couldn't even see one of the goals clearly through the blurry plastic, and to make matters worse, none of the heaters worked!
"I made the decision to call it from outside," Sims explained. "I wanted to do it right."
And do it right he did! Despite the subzero temperatures, Sims powered through, broadcasting every minute of the game. He even had to rely on his cell phone when the power went out due to a blown transformer and backup generators failed.
But Sims wasn't alone in his bravery. The event officials went above and beyond to ensure the comfort of the 4,608 attendees (capacity was 5,500), offering a warm food tent, free hand warmers, and mittens for kids. "They really took care of us," Sims said.
Despite the freezing conditions, Sims and everyone at the game seemed to embrace the experience. "We all thought we were crazy, but we're glad we did it," Sims joked. "It was a lovely experience, but next time, let's hope for warmer weather!"
Sims' passion for hockey and his dedication to his craft are truly inspiring. He even admitted that he'd do it all over again, 100%!
