Magic: The Gathering Arena's Brawl Format is at a Crossroads – And You’re Invited to Shape Its Future!
Brawl, once a niche format on MTG Arena (https://magic.wizards.com/en/mtgarena), has exploded in popularity over the past few years, solidifying its place as the platform's second most played format. This surge is a testament to the format's appeal, offering players a unique blend of Commander's singularity and Standard's accessibility. But with great popularity comes great responsibility – and some growing pains.
The Power Creep Dilemma: More Options, Less Variety?
As Brawl's player base grew, so did its card pool. Powerful staples like Mana Drain and Strip Mine injected a new level of strategic depth into the 99, while sets like Modern Horizons 3 introduced commanding new leaders. For some, this meant exciting deckbuilding possibilities. For others, it felt like a homogenization, with certain cards becoming near-mandatory inclusions, stifling creativity and diversity.
Casual Fun vs. Competitive Edge: Can Brawl Have It All?
Brawl's initial charm lay in its casual, laid-back nature, where players experimented with quirky decks and embraced the joy of the game. However, the influx of powerful cards has shifted the meta, attracting a more competitive crowd. This evolution, while exciting for some, risks alienating those who cherished Brawl's original spirit.
Navigating the Future: Balancing Act and Community Input
We're committed to nurturing both aspects of Brawl. We've taken initial steps by banning overly dominant cards to preserve the casual experience. Simultaneously, we're exploring a more competitive avenue, as evidenced by the recent Brawl Metagame Challenge, which revealed a thirst for a higher-stakes Brawl experience.
The Experiment Begins: Shaping Competitive Brawl
Our upcoming All-Access Brawl Modified Metagame Challenge (December 16, 2025 - January 6, 2026) is a crucial step in this exploration. We're testing different approaches to competitive Brawl, experimenting with ban lists and format structures. Should it be a free-for-all like Timeless, or a more restricted environment akin to Duel Commander? We want to hear from you!
This Challenge: A Power Shift
This iteration focuses on addressing power outliers. Dominant commanders like Ajani, Nacatl Pariah, who stifled deck diversity in the previous event, are banned, both as commanders and in decks. Conversely, we're taking a hands-off approach to the 99, allowing powerful cards like Mana Drain and Strip Mine, alongside five commander-specific free spells: Flawless Maneuver, Fierce Guardianship, Deadly Rollick, Deflecting Swat, and Obscuring Haze.
