Newcastle Red Bulls Triumph Over Perpignan in a Thrilling European Challenge Cup Match
In an exhilarating clash at Kingston Park, the Newcastle Red Bulls emerged victorious against Perpignan with a score of 26-19, securing their spot in the knockout stages of the European Challenge Cup. Christian Wade shone brightly in this match, marking his first try for the club and contributing significantly to this important win.
The French team initially took the lead when Peceli Yato demonstrated his physical prowess by charging over the line from close range. However, Newcastle quickly regrouped, showcasing their resilience. Wade’s impressive display of speed and strength allowed him to break through three defenders and score, leveling the game. Following Wade's try, Sammy Arnold further boosted Newcastle’s momentum with a well-executed finish after a brilliant team move.
As the first half progressed, Maxim Granell scored for Perpignan while Newcastle was temporarily reduced to 14 players due to Ethan Grayson’s yellow card, narrowing the score to 14-12 at halftime. Nevertheless, the home team maintained their intensity throughout the second half and solidified their advancement into the last 16 with one match left to play.
The Red Bulls extended their lead thanks to a spectacular try from Elliott Obatoyinbo, who crossed the line in the corner following some slick backline handling. George McGuigan then added another try, which provided Newcastle with crucial breathing room. Even though Granell managed to score again for Perpignan later in the match, Newcastle’s strong defensive effort and effective kicking from Grayson ensured they held on for the win.
Newcastle's record now stands impressively at three wins out of three in their European campaign. They will head to face the Welsh side Dragons in their final pool match without the pressure of needing to win to secure progression.
The match did not start smoothly for either side, as both appeared anxious and made several handling errors. However, Perpignan managed to settle down first, applying pressure that ultimately led to Yato's opening try. Their physical approach posed a significant threat, but Wade’s two remarkable tries within a span of three minutes turned the tide in favor of Newcastle. His first try showcased his ability to fend off an initial tackle and sidestep two more defenders before crossing near the posts, followed by Arnold’s stunning run and score aided by a remarkable offload from Oscar Usher, which established a comfortable 14-5 lead for Newcastle.
Despite Perpignan scoring another try during Grayson’s absence, Newcastle’s quality with the ball, combined with Grayson’s precise kicking and their unwavering defense, proved decisive. The combination of Obatoyinbo’s pacey finish and McGuigan’s powerful score ensured that Granell’s second try would not be enough to threaten Newcastle's lead.
