Dutch Teens' Shocking Sugar Intake: 16.5 Glasses of Sugary Drinks Weekly (2026)

Dutch teens' sugar intake is shocking! A recent study reveals that half of the teenagers aged 12 to 16 in the Netherlands consume a staggering amount of sugary soft drinks. But here's the concerning part: they drink an average of 9.5 glasses per week, and a whopping 51.7% consume 16.5 glasses weekly, which equates to 90 sugar cubes!

Is this a sweet tooth gone too far? The research, conducted by GGD Amsterdam, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and Ipsos I&O, highlights the potential health risks. High sugar intake is linked to obesity and type 2 diabetes, and these teens are already exceeding the recommended limits. The World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines suggest a 12-year-old girl with a moderate activity level should have no more than 44 sugar cubes weekly, and a 16-year-old active boy should cap at 79 cubes.

The study surveyed 839 Dutch teens about their sugary drink habits, including soft drinks, sports drinks, iced teas, fruit juices, and energy drinks. Interestingly, 72.6% of them view drinking these beverages as a 'normal' part of their lives. But here's where it gets controversial: The study found that easy access to these drinks at home significantly increases consumption, making teens 14 times more likely to be high consumers. Is this a matter of personal choice or a nudge towards unhealthy habits?

Most teens buy these drinks from supermarkets, and price sensitivity is a factor. Almost half (49.7%) admitted that higher prices would reduce their consumption, and 85% said they wouldn't buy soft drinks if the price rose above €3 per drink. The researchers suggest a sugar tax as a solution, with the Jetten I Cabinet planning to implement one by 2030. But is a sugar tax the answer, or is it an overreach? The researchers argue for an immediate tax, with rates based on sugar content, to curb this sweet addiction.
