Sheffield and Turner's Strong Performance in Valencia
Magnus Sheffield and Ben Turner had a remarkable showing at the Volta Comunitat Valenciana, finishing in sixth and eighth places respectively on the queen stage. The fourth day of the race was a challenging 172-kilometre test, with the Grenadiers duo showcasing their endurance as the race reached its final climbs.
The Cumbre del Sol ascent proved to be a pivotal moment, as a select peloton split, allowing both riders to set their own pace. Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull - Bora - Hansgrohe) seized the opportunity, winning the stage by 24 seconds and taking the lead in the race. Despite this, Sheffield and Turner maintained their positions in the general classification, with Sheffield 1:02 and Turner 1:56 behind Evenepoel.
Ben Turner's performance was particularly impressive, especially on the hilly parcours. However, Turner expressed that climbing is not his forte, finding it somewhat over his level. He attributed his success to his good legs and the team's strategy, stating that he pushed himself to see what was possible.
In contrast, AJ August's luck took a turn 24 hours after his stage victory. On Saturday, August and teammate Victor Langellotti were involved in a crash, with Langellotti eventually abandoning the race. Turner's climbing performance, despite the challenges, showcased his determination and the team's resilience.
Turner's post-race comments revealed his mindset: "I had good legs, but I don't enjoy climbing. It was a bit over my level, but I tried my best. It was a good day, and I was impressed. Magnus also performed well, and we rode well after yesterday's win. I asked the DS if I could go deep, and we set a hard pace. Only 20 guys made it over the top, so I thought my legs were good. I was unsure about the second-to-last climb, but my legs responded well. I rode for a result and saw what my legs could do, but it was incredibly hard."
This race highlights the team's ability to adapt and perform under pressure, leaving a lasting impression on the competition.
