In a groundbreaking move, Israel has become the first country to recognize Somaliland as a sovereign state, marking a significant milestone in the small nation's quest for international recognition since its declaration of independence from Somalia in 1991. This historic recognition includes the establishment of full diplomatic relations, with plans to open embassies and appoint ambassadors. The Israeli foreign minister, Gideon Sa'ar, emphasized the agreement's alignment with the spirit of the Abraham Accords, a series of normalization agreements between Israel and predominantly Arab states signed in 2020. The Israeli Prime Minister's office further solidified this bond by hosting a video call between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Somaliland's President, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, where they expressed mutual support and friendship. However, this move has sparked controversy, with Egypt and Turkey criticizing it as an overt interference in Somalia's domestic affairs, aligning with Israel's expansionist policies and efforts to prevent the recognition of a Palestinian state. Despite the criticism, the recognition is seen as a strategic move by Israel, given Somaliland's strategic location near Yemen, where Israel has conducted extensive airstrikes against Houthi rebels. Analysts suggest that Somaliland's territory could serve as a forward base for intelligence monitoring, logistical support, and direct operations against the Houthis. The UAE's military base in Berbera, Somaliland, further highlights the region's importance in the anti-Houthi campaign. Somaliland's President, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, has also revealed that US military officials have visited the region, indicating potential future recognition. The US administration, however, remains divided, with concerns about military cooperation with Somalia. Somaliland's democratic system, characterized by peaceful power transfers, has faced challenges in recent years, including the erosion of political rights and civic space, as noted by Freedom House. The recognition of Somaliland has been a topic of discussion in the US, with Senator Ted Cruz advocating for it as a strategic move to counter Chinese influence in Djibouti. The future of Somaliland's recognition remains uncertain, with ongoing debates and potential implications for regional dynamics.
