"There's no door I can't open, and no conversation I can't start," says Chris Stokes, the passionate president of the Jamaica Bobsleigh Federation. "It's all because of Cool Runnings."
Stokes' journey began in 1988 when he witnessed his brother Dudley's historic bobsleigh run at the Winter Olympics in Calgary. Little did he know, this moment would ignite a lifelong passion and lead him to become an integral part of the team's legacy.
The iconic Disney film, Cool Runnings, released 33 years ago, has kept the spirit of Jamaican bobsleigh alive. Its catchy soundbites and inspiring narrative have outshone the sport itself, but Stokes believes it's more than just a movie.
"It's not a documentary, but it's a timeless inspiration," he says. "People find strength in it, and it has the potential to change lives. The only thing that could surpass it is an Olympic medal."
Stokes' ambition might seem insane to some, but he's determined to make it a reality. After years of competing and serving in various roles, he took on the presidency with a clear vision: to win, not just inspire.
The Covid pandemic hindered their progress for the 2022 Olympics, but Stokes introduced a 10-year plan with a bold goal: a bobsleigh medal at the 2034 Games. The "Back to the Well" program was key, focusing on Jamaica's incredible athletic talent.
"I believe we have the world's best athletes," Stokes explains. And he's not alone in this belief; the team has attracted top talent, including former sprint champions and a promising young pilot, Shane Pitter.
Pitter, along with former Team GB athlete Mica Moore, will represent Jamaica at the Milano-Cortina Games. Their journey hasn't been without challenges. Pitter, still new to piloting, has never raced on most European tracks, including Cortina. But with the guidance of Joel Fearon, a 2014 Olympic bronze medallist, they aim for a top-12 finish.
Jamaica's success hasn't been universally accepted. Fearon shares, "We want people to give us the respect we deserve. Some teams and officials treat us like we're clueless, not realizing my Olympic medal status. It's hurtful, but we're determined to prove ourselves."
Despite financial constraints and a lack of proper training facilities, the team persists. Their sleds, cast-offs from other nations, showcase their resourcefulness. Stokes believes in the power of attitude over resources, a mindset inspired by Jamaica's iconic sprinter, Usain Bolt.
"Money is an illusion," he says. "We're here to do something extraordinary."
