A massive power outage has left 15,000 homes in the Côte-St-Luc area in the dark, right in the middle of a brutal deep freeze. This is a critical situation for residents, especially with the extreme cold temperatures Montreal is currently experiencing.
The power outage, which started around 10:30 a.m., affected not just Côte-St-Luc, but also parts of N.D.G and Montreal West, according to Hydro-Québec. The cause? Equipment failure at the Hampstead substation.
Hydro-Québec spokesperson Lynn St-Laurent assured that teams are working tirelessly to restore power as quickly as possible. However, some residents may have to endure the cold until 8 p.m., as indicated on the utility's website.
With temperatures dropping to around -25°C in the morning, and the wind chill making it feel even more frigid, this power outage couldn't have come at a worse time. MétéoMédia predicts that Quebec, alongside Ontario, will be the coldest region on Earth this weekend. In fact, it could get colder here than in parts of Antarctica, where it's currently summer and average inland temperatures are around -30°C.
Environment Canada has issued a warning for frostbite, emphasizing the severity of the situation.
