Thousands of gamers are ditching Windows for something new – and it's a Linux distro called Bazzite. But why?

Recently, the Bazzite team has been sharing updated usage stats, and the timing is interesting. Since Windows 10 reached its end-of-life, the project has seen a noticeable surge in new users. This shift begs the question: is Linux finally ready to take on the gaming world?
The Rise of Linux Gaming: A New Era?
It's no surprise to see this increase. Thanks to Proton, a compatibility layer, nearly 90% of Windows games can now run on Linux. This is a huge leap forward, making Linux a viable option for many gamers. But here's where it gets controversial: certain games are still off-limits.
The Roadblocks to Linux Gaming
Unfortunately, kernel-level anti-cheat systems still prevent major titles like Call of Duty, Apex Legends, Battlefield 6, Rainbow Six Siege, and Valorant from running on Linux. This is a significant hurdle, especially for those who enjoy these popular games.
Gaming isn't the only area where Linux faces limitations. It still lacks native support for essential software like Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office, and most professional-grade modeling software, although alternatives do exist.
Bazzite's Growing Popularity
Despite these drawbacks, Bazzite is still attracting a large user base. It currently boasts around 50,000 weekly users, with a growth rate of 1.25x. The project has also served a total of 2 petabytes of installs. To put that into perspective, one petabyte equals 1,000 terabytes, and each terabyte contains 1,000 gigabytes.
The Bigger Picture: Linux vs. Windows
For context, Linux currently accounts for 3.20% of Steam users, compared to 94.79% on Windows as of November 2025. It's still a massive gap, but the progress is undeniable. The user experience on Bazzite or SteamOS, particularly in a console-like setup, is now significantly improved compared to Windows.
Beyond the Desktop: Linux on Handhelds
And this is the part most people miss: Linux has also been shown to improve gaming performance on devices like the Xbox Ally and other Windows handheld gaming PCs. It makes these devices feel much more like traditional consoles.

This progress highlights how far Linux has come. Ideally, this momentum will push Microsoft to move faster, rather than getting slowed down by the realities of being such a large company, where decisions and meaningful feature updates can take far longer to land.
